Hiking in the Ozark Mountains and the Buffalo National River

If you love the outdoors, then you will truly be amazed by what the Ozark Mountains have to offer those that like to hike in the mountains. The Ozark Mountains have some of the best trails in this part of the country. There are numerous opportunities to explore and the scenery offers remarkable sightseeing. The trails range from the most scenic to the most rugged in the state, ranging from trails starting at 1 mile to 36.5 miles, and all vary in difficulty. The most unique feature about hiking is that it can be enjoyed anytime of the year. Whether it is admiring and viewing wildflowers in the spring, hiking to a cool stream for swimming and picnicking on a hot summer day, or sightseeing the outstanding fall colors, every season offers something different for the outdoorsman in all of us.

For over 135 miles and 95,000 acres, the Buffalo River is a sightseer's paradise. It is perfect for day hikes, overnight hikes, or combining a downstream river float with an upstream hike. The spectacular scenery of these trails is simply mind blowing. From historical home sites, old farmsteads, mountain streams, majestic bluffs, natural bridges, ancient caves and unexplored caves dating as far back as 12,000 years, spring wildflowers, watchable wildlife, beautiful rivers and streams to magnificent waterfalls reaching over 175 feet, these trails are sure to satisfy your taste for outdoor adventure.

Another great idea for hiking is in the old community of Erbie. There are a number of trails in this area which provide opportunities for a short stroll, a good day-long hike, or an overnight trip. There are many historical sights located on these trails. Elk and deer frequent the old fields along the river in the early morning and evening hours. These trails can be hiked individually or combined into a loop of approximately 7.5 miles.
